Are you a devotee of late great genre star Sir Christopher Lee and still trying to figure the perfect way to bring in the New Year? Well look no further: NYC’s IFC Center (323 Sixth Avenue at 3rd Street; 212-924-7771) is the place to be as the movie house begins a month-long celebration of the British scream actor.
Beginning midnight, January 1st, the IFC Center’s popular “Waverly Midnights” program will begin a Lee tribute, opening with the Hammer classic THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTIEN. Known for being a sci-fi and horror icon, Lee enjoyed an extensive career that spanned well over six decades. He transformed himself into Count Dracula, was rebuilt by Dr. Frankenstein into the Creature and has even gone underwraps as The Mummy. Audiences throughout the years also discovered his work in the James Bond, LORD OF THE RINGS and STAR WARS franchises. Yet no matter what characters Lee embodied, his performances captivated movie fans around the world.
IFC Center will run a Lee film at midnight each weekend from January 1st to March 19th. Among the notorious nine include HORROR OF DRACULA, THE MUMMY, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, THE WICKER MAN, GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH and one of the actor’s final efforts, the animated EXTRAORDINARY TALES.
