As many reported on Twitter and the like last night, midst polarizing reaction (some say thrilling and intensely hyper violent, while others are finding the remake gory fan service), the director revealed he's already begun work on a sequel. Clearly, Sony is confident in the film, given its tagline and roof-raising trailer.

Meanwhile, Shock Till You Drop is currently entrenched in interviews for the film, which means speaking with original deadites Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, who along with Sam Raimi produced the remake. Tapert went ahead and commented on the recent talk of Raimi returning to the original franchise, explaining—suprisingly—"That would be ARMY OF DARKNESS 2. Everybody calls it EVIL DEAD 4, but ARMY OF DARKNESS wasn't called EVIL DEAD anywhere except by the fans."

Campbell, keeping expectations tempered commented on his return and another DEAD film, by saying "Sam threatens this every six months...They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he's not going to let that go, and I'm never going to say 'no.' It'll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that's what he does and who knows? It may happen."

All the audiences can now love "MANDY LANE"

A stylish, successful modern slasher from Levine, ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE was heartily praised at its 2006 Toronto Film Festival premiere, where buzz quickly swelled and the Weinsteins were poised to release. As many know, in the U.S., that never happened.

As Weinsteins dropped it, Senator Entertainment seemed to swoop in until they dissolved prior to release. Radius co-president Tom Quinn tells Deadline, “It is one of my favorite horror films I’ve seen in the last decade, and if I could have afforded it at Magnolia, I would have bought it then. We were finally able to untangle the film’s rights at a time when a multi-platform release makes perfect sense for a film like this. Jonathan’s film WARM BODIES has grossed over $60 million, and to me this movie surpasses what is available to us on the open market.”

MANDY LANE stars Heard as the titular object of everyone's high school affections. Pure and on a pedestal, she heads on a weekend getaway that sees the classmates who surround her have their lives cut short. Radius' plans for the film include the now popular VOD and limited theatrical release with the "top 50 markets" targeted for the latter.

Despite being available for those with region-free players, it's been years since I've seen the film and am very much looking forward to seeing its proper stateside release and promptly rediscovering. Levine, of course, has since gone on to the great THE WACKNESS and last month's WARM BODIES,

ANTIVIRAL is a strange, surreal beast. Set in a future that finds celebrity culture at its sickening peak, the film follows "Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) who works at the Lucas Clinic, which has an unusual and highly profitable line of business: deliberately infecting paying customers with diseases harvested from top celebrities, thus providing a "biological communion" between stars and fans."

"Though his work environment is tightly monitored, Syd manages to sneak viruses out of the office and retool them on his personal console for his lucrative sideline supplying the black-market disease trade. When Syd is tasked by his employer to collect a virus from starlet Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon), he is unable to resist the temptation to get closer to one of his own personal celebrity obsessions. Injecting the virus into his own bloodstream, Syd is launched down a dangerous path—and the stakes are raised even higher when he learns that Hannah's illness is potentially fatal."

The journey Syd finds himself on is an often dizzying, original one that certainly recalls the best of the director's father's work, and introduces a stylistic new voice interested in going way-out places. For more on the film, see Chris Alexander's review, and look out for FANGORIA #323 (on sale next month) for an exclusive talk with Cronenberg.
[REC] 2, if you’ll remember concluded with the reveal that
the entirely lovable heroine put through so much hell, is now an agent of it.
After a legendary scene of serpent transfer (it freaked me out, endlessly) it
seems Angela (Manuela Velasco), “the young television reporter who entered the building with the
firemen, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that
she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a
provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will
have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore
and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the

Featuring the music of original STREETS composer Jim Steinmann alongside new songs by Anthony Riparetti and performed by The Roxy Gunn Project, with longtime fave Deborah Van Valkenburgh reprising her role as Cody's sassy sister, THE ROAD TO HELL offers a dark flipside to the classic rock n roll fable.

Chicago artist Neil Klemz created some great alternative artwork to promote the Chicago show, pictured here.

THE TRIPLE THREAT FILM FEST
Tribute to Albert Pyun
Saturday March 9th, 7pm-Midnight
Patio Theatre
6008 W.

That film, co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE's Tobe Hooper is a cinematic treasure, which has forever made it target for redo. It saw picturesque family the Freelings (led by Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) truly understand the horrors of suburban development through menacing spectral activity atop a covered Indian burial ground.

A host of writers including SINISTER's Scott Derrickson, David Lindsay-Abaire and THE POSESSION's Juliet Snowden & Stiles White have previously worked on drafts of a new version (there was once even speculation Sam Raimi could take it on), but Deadline revealed little else aside from Kenan's involvement, so whether a pre-existing script or entirely new one will be used is unknown. Also unknown, the film's goals. Kenan is arguably a director of younger-aged fare. While most parents wouldn't be uncomfortable letting their newly teenaged spawn watch the often fun, but frightening original, it does remain particularly layered, and frankly, great. Will Kenan make a jump and shoot for such, or just aim lower?

“We’ve had midnight for a long time and then we changed the
name to Cinemania for a couple of years.
This year, we’re returning to Midnight and kind of going for more of a
classical approach to programming genre filmmaking and the section,” Cusumano tells
Fango, before previewing the genre-centric section. “We just really didn’t want
to feel limited by the section and we felt like Cinemania sort of implied
something wacky and zany, and while we have that, we didn’t want to be closed
off at all to the full breadth of what people were really doing. I think that’s
how we make it Tribeca, because in all of our sections, we really want to not
approach programming with any agenda, but let the films show us what they are
and we kind of represent that and convey it in all its diversity to the
audience.”

In what could be their strongest s slate yet, Tribeca sees
the return of Keshales and Papushado, who brought the world premiere of their
darkly hilarious RABIES to the fest two years ago and took off greatly from
there. Of course, that would lead us to question which of the more unknown
selections could break out come May: New Zealand cannibal comedy FRESH MEAT? Mad
Scientist cyborg story THE MACHINE? “We’re really excited about that, first of
all. RABIES was something we kind of discovered and launched and we are so
proud of them; to be able to bring them back in Spotlight with this bigger film
is very triumphant for all of us,” the programmer says. “It’s always hard to
predict what’s

In bocca al lupo; Latest poster for Eli Roth-directed series, "HEMLOCK GROVE"

“Who’s really the monster,” horror stories have asked for a
long, long time now. HEMLOCK GROVE, whose promotional materials have danced
around its lycanthropy so far, has now put the monstrous nature on full display
with that age-old twist.

A tale of death, class divides, gypsies and seemingly
werewolves, HEMLOCK GROVE (based on the novel from Brian McGreevy) revolves around the murder of a young girl in a
ravaged Pennsylvania steel town, where suspicions rise that the culprit might
not be human—and may have escaped from a nearby biotech facility. TWIN PEAKS
has been cited as parallel and influence and its previous trailer certainly holds
to strange, illicit happenings around a small town, that reach far beyond mere
murder.

Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Lily Taylor, Bill Skarsgård
and Landon Liboiron star. The Roth-directed pilot, as well as the other twelve
episodes of HEMLOCK GROVE all premiere on Netflix April 19.

Drafthouse Films have shown some impressive curating muscle with their growing slate of cult and indie films old and new, and Toronto-based Films We Like has picked up their latest for theatrical release in the great white north, beginning with this T-Dot double-header of raging machismo with Ted "RAMBO" Kotcheff's Aussie outback terror WAKE IN FRIGHT (1971)- a seminal film in kicking off the Ozploitation explosion and bizarre WTF musical actioner MIAMI CONNECTION (1987) from co-director/star Y.K. Kim.

While both films celebrate the bizarre rituals of manliness in their own way WAKE IN FRIGHT through drunken hooliganism, kangaroo hunts (animal lovers beware), a creepily shirtless Donald Pleasence and the "aggressive hospitality" of the sun-soaked outback, and MIAMI CONNECTION through nonsensical martial arts misadventures, moustaches and musical interludes by rock band Dragon Sound in other ways they couldn't be more different. WAKE IN FRIGHT is likely the best film Ted Kotcheff ever made, rescued from obscurity (and the near destruction of the original negatives) to be given its proper due stateside only 40 years after the fact, and MIAMI CONNECTION, well it's likely the ONLY film Y.K. Kim ever made, but one that will go down in the history books nonetheless for its sheer, unintentional absurdism (not to mention its valiant rallying cry for international peace as emblematized though Dragon Sound tunes such as "Friends Forever" and "Against the Ninja"
