“ALIEN: COVENANT” Gets Official Release Date, Story & Cast Details

,

If you disregard the ALIEN VS. PREDATOR films as well as Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS, the last tried-and-true ALIEN effort was nearly 20 years ago with 1997’s ALIEN: RESURRECTION. However, with the ‘indefinite hold’ currently on Neill Blomkamp’s ALIEN effort (which would have seen both Hicks and Ripley back into the franchise), the best chance of seeing the Xenomorph back in proper form was Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS follow-up, which promised to bridge that prequel to Scott’s ’79 original. Yet today, in a surprise announcement, 20th Century Fox has revealed the official title for Scott’s second ALIEN prequel, entitled ALIEN: COVENANT, as well as the synopsis, returning PROMETHEUS cast and exactly when we’ll see the return of the ALIEN franchise.

Directly from 20th Century Fox, here’s the official story for ALIEN: COVENANT…

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

So, what do we know about ALIEN: COVENANT? Well, for starters, we know that the sole returning cast member of PROMETHEUS will be Michael Fassbender, which pretty much counts out that the philosophical journey of Elizabeth Shaw continuing in this cinematic venture. It also shows that ALIEN: COVENANT will not be the direct post-PROMETHEUS prequel to ALIEN, as it will be only be the second of a prequel trilogy. And lastly, with the ALIEN name now officially in the title, chances are Scott will be reuniting with a Xenomorph- or at least a variation of a Xenomorph- outside of the brief glimpse at the end of PROMETHEUS.

Furthermore, ALIEN: COVENANT has been given a release date of 10/07/2017, giving a proper 20-year gap between the last Ripley-starring ALIEN film and Scott’s latest ALIEN venture. We also know the script is currently being tailored by PENNY DREADFUL and SPECTRE mastermind John Logan, working off of a previous draft from Jack Paglan and Michael Green. And hopefully, Scott decides to go for a more substance than style this time around the quell the criticisms of the sadly unfocused PROMETHEUS, although with Logan’s penchant for mythology-retooling, this writer suspects COVENANT will do just that.
